Primary & Secondary Audiences of the Slasher Genre

Primary Audience

The primary audience of slasher films is 15-24 year old's, almost entirely made up of adolescents. There are a few reasons why teenagers are drawn to the genre. Critics argue that it is the frequent violence, nudity and sex that attract a teenage audience.  Slasher films usually feature teenagers as the main characters, and adults are portrayed to be useless. The age of the characters attracts the target audience of 15-24 year old's, as they can relate to the emotions and feelings expressed by the teenagers on screen. 

Secondary Audience

The secondary audience of slasher films is 24-35 year olds, or mature youth.
